Does red mulch produce
superior tomatoes?

There is anecdotal evidence to suggest that using red plastic around tomato plants makes the plant sturdier and more productive.

Try it and see. Use red plastic around some plants of the same variety...and don't put red mulch around others. E-mail us the results in the fall and we'll report them in Juicy Bits.

There is a scientific basis to think that red mulch might work. The color red is part of the light spectrum that promotes photosynthesis (the life processes) in plants. So more red might mean better growth. A red mulch would reflect more red onto the leaves.

Should make an interesting experiment, don't you think?
